How does a Fridge work

A refrigerator, commonly known as a fridge, works on the principle of heat transfer and the refrigeration cycle to keep food and other perishable items cool. Here’s a simplified explanation of how a fridge works:

  1. Compression: The process begins with a compressor, usually located at the back or bottom of the refrigerator. The compressor compresses a refrigerant gas, typically a compound called a hydrofluorocarbon (HFC), into a high-pressure, high-temperature gas.
  2. Condensation: The compressed gas flows into the condenser coils at the back or underneath the refrigerator. These coils are designed to dissipate heat and cool down the refrigerant gas. As the gas releases heat, it condenses into a high-pressure liquid.
  3. Expansion: The high-pressure liquid refrigerant then passes through a small opening called the expansion valve or capillary tube. As it passes through this valve, the refrigerant rapidly expands, which causes a pressure drop.
  4. Evaporation: The low-pressure liquid refrigerant enters the evaporator coils, typically inside the refrigerator. These coils are in contact with the air inside the fridge. As the refrigerant expands and evaporates, it absorbs heat from the surrounding air, cooling it down. This is why you feel a cold breeze when you stand in front of an open fridge.
  5. Absorption of heat: The absorbed heat in the evaporator coils causes the temperature inside the fridge to decrease, and the cool air is circulated throughout the refrigerator compartment.
  6. Return to compression: The refrigerant, now in the form of a low-pressure gas, returns to the compressor, and the cycle begins again.

Additionally, modern refrigerators often include a thermostat that senses the temperature inside the fridge. When the temperature rises above the desired level, the compressor is activated to start the refrigeration cycle and bring the temperature back down.

Overall, the refrigerator works by removing heat from the interior compartment and releasing it outside, keeping the contents cool and preserved.
